Want to Raise More this GivingTuesday? Tell a Story.

As GivingTuesday approaches, nonprofits are scrambling to find the most effective ways to engage donors. But you already have the most potent tool to engage your supporters: storytelling. Yes, the art of crafting narratives that speak directly to the hearts of your donors can make all the difference.

In this post, let's review the 'Storytelling' section of the 2023 Year-End & GivingTuesday Fundraising Toolkit.

Let's get into it.

Know Your Audience

Before you even begin to craft your story, you need to know who you're talking to. Dive into your donor database, look at demographics, and conduct surveys. The more you know about your audience, the more you can tailor your storytelling to resonate with them.

→ Define Your Desired Donor Profile

Once you've gathered this information, the next step is identifying those who align closely with your mission. These are your potential advocates, the ones most likely to share your story and contribute to your cause. These advocates could take many forms: they might be donors who also volunteer, sustainers, or even those who have run a Facebook birthday fundraiser for you.

→ Research Donor Groups

Segmentation is key. Group your donors based on shared characteristics or interests. This allows you to create stories that relate to each group's motivations. Remember, inclusivity and diversity in your storytelling will make your narratives resonate with a broader audience.

Craft Empathetic & Relatable Stories

Empathy is the cornerstone of compelling storytelling. While stats, graphs, and figures are important, appealing to people's emotions works exponentially better. So, use that data but weave it into compelling narratives that touch real people (or animals).

  • Visuals: Use images and videos to capture attention and evoke emotions.

  • Tone: Experiment with different tones—dramatic, impactful, emotional, or even humorous.

  • Humanize: Put a face to the cause and show how support translates into tangible outcomes.

  • Authenticity: Share testimonials and encourage user-generated content.

Understand Constraints & Address Different Levels of Donor Involvement

Your donors are human, and they're affected by external factors like economic uncertainty. Craft stories that are empathetic to these challenges, showing how even small contributions can make a significant impact. This is especially important for younger or potential new donors just starting their relationship with your organization. Create stories acknowledging different levels of involvement, making each donor feel valued and integral to your mission.

Leverage Data and Analytics

Data is your friend. Use analytics to gauge how well your stories are performing. While 'dollars raised' is an obvious metric to track, pay attention to other indicators like page views, time spent on the page, and actions like social media follows or newsletter sign-ups. These are significant indicators that you have supporters looking to start a relationship with your organization and may become donors as you share more about your work.

Use AI to Streamline Content Creation

Platforms like ChatGPT can help you generate persuasive copy, while tools like Midjourney can assist in crafting original graphics. These AI-driven resources save time and infuse creativity into your messaging. Consider using a real-world example to illustrate how AI can enhance your campaign.

Use a Multi-Channel Approach

Consistency is key. Whether it's TikTok, Threads, or X (formerly known as Twitter), maintaining a cohesive narrative across platforms ensures that your message is recognized and trusted, regardless of where your audience encounters it.
